p People are always asking me for relationship advice, and in particular advice on how to get their ex girlfriends back! Where to Gather with Your Friends

I almost did it. google plus seemed like a great idea. I am recently deeply disgusted with facebook for continuing to host some horribly misogynistic pages despite petitions asking them to remove them (you can see article in the guardian online or ms magazine). So, I thought I could switch to the google social networking tool. What was really appealing was that it apparently was going to have a a href=http://www.natter.com/video chat/a where up to four people could speak to each other at the same time (don’t take my word for this, it might have been some sort of Chinese whispers!)/p

I had this great idea that I would be able to organize a collective camping trip with all of the people that I love. We would get together regularly via the chat mechanism, then we would decided where to go that was equidistant from all of us. I was thinking that Iceland in the summer would be great. It would be like a social networking family reunion all made possible by the magic of google plus./p

What burst the bubble was the realization that having my social network integrated with one of the most used search engines could completely violate my privacy. It is entirely possible to opt out of your google plus profile being indexed by search engines. It is however, very easy to let it happen and then pretty soon people you havenrsquo;t seen in 20 years could do a google search and find out too much personal information. If you donrsquo;t opt out, your photo albums on Picassa and your public profile would be searchable as part of the google megopolis. I am still completely committed to organizing a reunion with friends from both sides of the Atlantic, I just donrsquo;t think google is going to be the tool for me to use./p

Go camper-van-ing!

Years ago, when flower-power ruled and Jimi Hendrix blasted out of every single stereo in existence, camper vans were considered the beasts of the road: the best form of four-wheeled transportation there is, and the ideal way to explore the coastline with friends and lovers.

Then, horribly, the 1980s and 1990s came along, destroying the camper van dream and turning the idea of camper vans into something less than sexy. The love of camper vans still remained of course, but instead of tens of camper vans hitting the European roads every weekend, it was just a few hardcore enthusiasts hell-bent on keeping this dying form of transportation alive.

And that, for a while, looked to be how it would stay forever, until…

Well, until not one isolated thing, in fact, but a number of things all came together to bring the dream back to the new millennium. One of them was cooking shows on TV. Suddenly, TV chefs who usually cooked in plush aluminium kitchens were going out into the countryside, roaming in their camper vans and cooking up a storm all across the English coasts. At one point in 2010 there were four shows on TV on different channels all in the same evening!

One such person who will be only too pleased I am blogging about this is Steve from Sweden and his wife Suz. Steve and Suz Rooker, in fact. Steve, if you didn’t know, is the man behind the legendary Campervan Cookbook. A book which focuses on making your camping experience as exciting as possible, it shows you some of the finest recipes you can make, and all with just a few key implements like a gas stove and chopping board.

And one thing I’m sure Steve would want me to say here is that not everyone who drives a camper van has long hair and looks like a stereotypical hippie. In fact, some of the biggest camper van enthusiasts in the UK are men who wear a three piece suit to work every day and are as business-like and professional as they come. So it just goes to show you: the free-living camper van spirit is in everyone, from marketing professionals to tree surgeons and all those in-between.

If you’ve been pondering buying a camper van for a while and still haven’t made your mind up, please, do. There really is nothing quite like driving a camper van, and that, my friend, is a fact.
